Integrating AI into Schools: Going Beyond the Basics

Dr. Shannon H. Doak, Director of Technology, Nanjing International School

Dr. Shannon H. Doak, Director of Technology, Nanjing International School

Dr. Shannon Doak is an edtech and Innovation Leader, Speaker, Author, and Poe Creator. He is an expert in blended learning, eLearning, and making professional development more effective. He is an AI enthusiast and early adopter. He has been at the forefront of changing the digital and educational landscape of the schools he has worked for. He is currently the Director of Technology at Nanjing International School.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is becoming a staple in modern education, with tools like generative AI supporting teachers in crafting lessons, activities, and assessments. Teachers use these AI-powered tools to save time on administrative tasks, yet the benefits to student learning remain minimal. Current approaches do little more than automate existing processes, lacking the depth and innovation needed to enhance the educational experience genuinely. In this article, Dr. Shannon Doak urges readers to unlock AI's full potential. He highlights the need to think beyond its current uses and focus on deeper integration that aligns with modern learning theories.

The hurdles of the current AI integration in schools

At present, AI's role in schools is limited and uninspired. Teachers may use generative AI to create lesson plans or assessments, largely reinforcing the traditional, top-down education model. Meanwhile, students are left in a passive role, with little opportunity to engage meaningfully with AI beyond simply completing assignments. This limited approach fails to create opportunities for deeper learning or to cultivate essential skills such as critical thinking and problem-solving.

By focusing primarily on time-saving measures for educators, we are missing the broader potential of AI to transform the learning experience truly. AI can and should be doing more than just making administrative tasks easier; it should be an integral tool that enhances learning and personal growth. The current integration of AI falls short of this goal, neglecting to engage students in ways that would promote deeper understanding and foster a love for learning.

A synergy: Generative AI and modern learning theories

To fully realize AI's potential in education, we must move beyond its current applications and focus on integrating it in ways that support contemporary learning theories. AI integration should be aimed at creating a more personalized, interactive, and adaptive learning environment that meets the diverse needs of all students.

    Adaptive learning systems

Generative AI can revolutionize the classroom by creating customized learning pathways tailored to individual student needs. Unlike the one-size-fits-all model that dominates many classrooms today, AI-driven adaptive learning systems adjust in real-time based on a student's performance, engagement, and even emotional responses. This approach ensures that every student, regardless of their starting point, can achieve mastery at their own pace.

    Intelligent tutoring systems

Generative AI can simulate one-on-one tutoring experiences, offering instant feedback, clarifying doubts and providing explanations that cater to individual learning styles. Intelligent tutoring systems can adapt to responses based on students' interaction with the material, fostering better understanding and retention. This mimics the benefits of personalized instruction, a concept supported by Cognitive Learning Theory, which emphasizes the importance of tailored feedback and scaffolding to help students make meaningful connections.

AI can and should be doing more than just making administrative tasks easier; it should be an integral tool that enhances learning and personal growth.

By providing a more personalized approach to learning, intelligent tutoring systems help students stay engaged and motivated. They also offer a viable solution to the challenges of large class sizes and limited teacher time, ensuring every student receives the attention and support they need.

    Creative and analytical skill development

Generative AI can play a significant role in fostering creativity and critical thinking by prompting students to engage in creative exercises such as writing, art, and music. AI-powered tools can provide unique challenges, encouraging students to think outside the box and explore new ideas. Additionally, these tools can offer instant feedback and suggestions, helping students refine their work and develop their analytical skills.

This aligns with Constructivist Learning Theory, which emphasizes learning through experience and encourages students to experiment, create, and reflect. By integrating AI in this way, we not only foster creativity but also enhance critical thinking and problem-solving abilities—skills that are crucial for success in today's rapidly evolving world.

No-code AI chatbots for enhanced learning

One of the most exciting opportunities for AI in education lies in custom-built AI chatbots that students can create themselves—without needing to write a single line of code. Using natural, everyday language, students can design chatbots that help them study, ask questions, and engage in simulated peer discussions. These no-code tools empower students to take control of their learning, experiment with AI capabilities, and explore the use of the vast knowledge contained within Large Language Models (LLMs). This hands-on approach demystifies AI, encourages curiosity, and promotes a deeper understanding of how AI can enhance learning.

    Call to Action,

To truly integrate AI into our schools, we must think beyond its current, limited uses. Educators, policymakers and tech developers must collaborate on innovative approaches that align AI integration with modern learning theories. We must focus on creating adaptive learning environments, developing intelligent tutoring systems, and fostering creativity and critical thinking.

Generative AI can transform education, but only if we use it wisely. It's time to move beyond the basics and explore how AI can create a more dynamic, engaging, and personalized learning experience for every student. The future of education depends on it. Let’s start this journey now.
